Wastewater Plant Update
Posted: January 6, 2009
Update December 2008: (Click on thumbnails to view pictures larger) Influent Pump Station (IPS) After some final details connecting discharge piping to the IPS pumps, a temporary loop of piping was set up to send water (reclaimed water, not sewage) back from the new secondary clarifiers to the IPS for the IPS pumps to send through the grit treatment unit and the oxidation ditches then on to the secondary clarifiers again. This water loop testing is required in the construction contract to demonstrate the new facilities meet operational requirements.

Piping to IPS WetwellOxidation Ditches (ODs) In November, the ODs starting filling with reclaimed water. Once full, the propeller mixers and recirculation pumps were placed in service as part of the water loop operational testing procedure. Some final detail work was completed on the OD aeration blowers, such as installation of blower and air piping insulation.

Receiving StationSolids Handling The grease and scum from the secondary clarifiers will be pumped to the 2 Dissolved Air Floatation Thickeners (DAFTs). Quite a bit of work was completed at these units in December including completion of the area concrete slab and installation of the associated equipment. Roofs were installed on the circular tanks to capture and control any odors which may be generated in these units. This “foul air” will be removed by blowers and diffused through a scrubbing media. The material of the media is wood chips and compost which promotes the growth of an odor removing bacterium.

(without media)Secondary Effluent Equalization Pump Station (SEEPS) When the plant flow is normal (without all the temporary water recirculation loops for testing), the water leaving the secondary clarifiers will flow to an equalization tank for temporary storage of each day’s peak flow. After the peak flow has diminished to lower flows, this stored peak water will be pumps out of the tank by the SEEPS. Much work was completed in December on this SEEPS structure including construction of the pump station’s top slab and the installation of a retaining wall.

Pulling Wire from Admin Building to Filter/UV BuildingMiscellaneous Some smaller items were completed, for example the installation of the pumps for the plant’s new second storm water pump station and installation of some channel grating. Also, work continued on the site final grading in preparation for road paving scheduled for early 2009. Training in December was a little reduced due to the holidays, but Staff did learn about some new equipment such as the submersible solids-pumping secondary scum/grease pumps.
